With its December 16 release date approaching, the cast and crew of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are out chatting with press about the film (stay tuned for Fandango's interviews in the coming days), and while lots of noise is being made about Rogue One and how truly different and exciting it is for a Star Wars movie (watch our brief footage reaction here), it's impossible not to be curious about the future of Star Wars, too.
When Fandango sat down for a chat with Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, we asked him what other Star Wars movie he'd most like to see or direct, and in what time period. Not surprisingly, it's that time period in and around the original trilogy that will forever intrigue him.
"To be honest, Rogue One is the period I love," he said. "It’s connecting to the original New Hope. If someone made other films in that era – and I don’t necessarily think this is happening, I have no inside knowledge – but that desire to see Obi-Wan Kenobi. Tattooine, basically, I love. As a kid I remember wanting to grow up there; anything in that "Original Trilogy" era I am just besotted with, and it’s just like going back home to your childhood."
When we asked why he dreamed about growing up on what's essentially a pretty miserable looking desert planet, Edwards explained that even the worst Star Wars locations look incredibly attractive because of the way they are presented to us.
"That’s the thing with Star Wars – even the bad places you want to go to," he said. "We were doing that on [Rogue One]; there are places that are bad, but you still want to go there. You want to make it beautiful; you want to go and hang out there even if it’s horrific."
